CSA week 1

This was the first week of our summer vegetable CSA through Gazy Brothers Farm, and I’m pretty excited with what we’ve got. This is our second year with the Gazy CSA, and one of the things we like about it is that we get to choose our vegetables, and we can pick them up at our Saturday farmers market here in town. While I’m generally happy having someone else choose for me (what I sense is the standard vegetable CSA route), I do like having some options. You show up at the stand, sign in (which later in the season translates as “say hi”) and choose 9 vegetable “units” (a bunch of beets, pound or so of green beans, head of cauliflower, etc. “Three good handfuls” of fava beans was the answer to my query on how much I should take. This early in the season the zucchini, beets, and onions are on the small side, but they get bigger as summer progresses. We’re looking forward to the potatoes, which are terrific.

Today we ended up with:

  • red beets
  • swiss chard
  • kale
  • red onions
  • yellow onions
  • zucchini
  • fava beans
  • broccoli
  • cauliflower

So let the week’s planning begin!

    Looking forward to seeing what you do with that. Our share looks pretty similar except that it’s too late for kale and too early for cauliflower.

    Thanks! Zucchini fritters, grilled onions, and roasted beets are all on the docket for this week. Started with sauteed chard and lentils last night, which were great.
